Police: Car-death suspect spoke freely, waived lawyer

By Oliver Mackson

Goshen - Aramis Cabrera acknowledged his right to a lawyer, turned it down and spoke freely about how the rental van he was driving hit and killed 67-year-old Angela Manouvelos last year, a state police investigator testified Friday in Orange County Court.
Investigator Darrin Fulton told Judge Nicholas DeRosa that Cabrera, 24, was full of remorse after the May 18 death of Manouvelos. Cabrera told the investigator that just before the impact, his attention was drawn to a group of people standing on a curb in the National Wholesale Liquidators parking lot.
Cabrera’s charged with criminally negligent homicide and speeding. He’s also facing a civil suit. A lawyer for Manouvelos’ estate contends that Cabrera’s employer, Rent-a-Center, was warned before the accident that its employees were speeding through the parking lot.
Friday’s testimony occurred during a hearing to determine whether Cabrera’s statement was obtained legally. He is free on $1,000 bail.
